I filed my Income Tax Return for AY 2026-27 through the Income Tax e-filing portal about a week ago while living in the UAE. This is my second time filing as an NRI, and I successfully e-verified the return using Aadhaar OTP right after submitting it.
When I log in to the portal, I can see the return under my filed returns, but I'm a bit confused about the status. It currently says "Successfully e-Verified", and I'm not sure whether that means the filing is complete or if there's another stage where the return gets processed.
I've also seen people mention statuses like "Return Processing," "Processed," and "Refund Issued." Since this is my first year expecting a refund due to excess TDS deducted from my NRO fixed deposit, I'd like to know how I can track the progress online.
Has anyone recently checked their ITR filing status online? How long did it take for your status to move from e-verified to processed? Is there any separate page to check the refund status, or is everything available on the same portal?
I know processing times can vary, but I'd love to hear how it worked for others.
If you have an e-Filing account, I find the login method more useful because you can see additional information.
After logging in, go to:
e-File → Income Tax Returns → View Filed Returns
You can see your filed returns there and download the ITR-V acknowledgement, complete ITR PDF, and, where available, the intimation order. The View Details option can also show the return's lifecycle and pending actions.
Yes, you can check your ITR status without logging in.
On the Income Tax e-Filing portal, select Income Tax Return (ITR) Status, then enter your acknowledgement number and a valid mobile number. You will receive a 6-digit OTP, after which the current status can be displayed. The Income Tax Department says the mobile number does not have to be the one registered with the e-Filing account for this pre-login service.
I think many people assume that "Successfully e-Verified" means the return has already been processed, but that's not how it worked in my case.
For me, the sequence was:
I filed from Australia, and the entire process took around three weeks. My refund arrived shortly after the processed status appeared.
Processing times can vary depending on the return and whether the department needs any additional review, so I wouldn't worry if your status stays the same for a while.
Mine took a little longer because the department requested additional verification for one of my TDS entries. I had filed from Canada and was expecting a refund from tax deducted on property rent.
The status remained unchanged for almost three weeks, so I initially thought something had gone wrong. Eventually, it moved to processing without me doing anything.
One suggestion is to make sure your bank account is pre-validated on the portal. I realized mine wasn't linked correctly, and I updated it while waiting. It didn't delay my return, but it gave me peace of mind knowing the refund could be credited without any issues.

The status itself is important.
